Havening (from the term “Safe Haven”) is a technique which is designed to allow the brain to de-link a traumatizing/hi-jacking memory and remove its negative effects from both our psyche and body. The Havening protocol uses the sensory input of human touch as a therapeutic tool. This touch is organic to our nature, we have all “wrung” our hands when upset, given ourselves the “butterfly hug” to calm ourselves down, or gently stroked our loved ones faces to to settle them down. Our body knows instinctively what it needs to relax. The scientific reason for this relaxation is that the touch provides Delta Waves which brings serotonin and oxytocin into our system, thereby calming the amygdala and allowing us to process in real time.
As a practitioner, I have found the Havening Technique to be extremely helpful in and out of sessions. My clients are able to use this technique to calm themselves after a traumatic meeting, encounter…. or to resource/ground them before an anxious event. They are able to use this technique not only on themselves, but also with their partners and children. With the help of mirror neurons and the effect of symbiotic Havening, both the client and their partner can move into a calming state of being.
